Background of the study

In recent years, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into educational systems has shown considerable potential in enhancing learning experiences for students with disabilities. Students with physical, visual, auditory, and cognitive disabilities often face barriers in accessing and engaging with traditional learning resources. AI-powered learning adaptation systems can help bridge these gaps by personalizing content delivery, providing real-time support, and ensuring accessibility. These systems can adjust lesson formats, provide speech-to-text or text-to-speech features, and facilitate interaction through alternative interfaces. In Jere LGA, Borno State, the challenges faced by students with disabilities in accessing quality education remain prevalent. This study seeks to explore the feasibility of implementing AI-based learning adaptation systems to support students with disabilities in the region, fostering a more inclusive learning environment.

Statement of the problem

Students with disabilities in Jere LGA, Borno State, often encounter challenges in accessing appropriate learning resources and receiving support tailored to their specific needs. The lack of adaptive learning tools that accommodate disabilities limits these students' academic performance and overall learning experiences. Although there is growing interest in AI-based technologies to address these challenges, there is limited research and application in the context of Borno State, particularly in Jere LGA. The absence of AI-powered educational tools that cater to students with disabilities creates an opportunity for this research to investigate how such systems can be developed and implemented to support these students.

Objectives of the study

1. To design an AI-based learning adaptation system tailored to the needs of students with disabilities in Jere LGA, Borno State.

2. To assess the effectiveness of the AI system in improving learning outcomes for students with disabilities.

3. To evaluate the feasibility and challenges of implementing AI-based learning systems in schools in Jere LGA.

Research questions

1. How effective is the AI-based learning adaptation system in improving academic performance for students with disabilities in Jere LGA?

2. What are the key features of the AI system that most benefit students with disabilities?

3. What challenges exist in implementing AI-based learning adaptation systems in Jere LGA’s schools?

Research hypotheses

1. The AI-based learning adaptation system will significantly improve academic performance among students with disabilities in Jere LGA.

2. The AI system’s personalized learning features will enhance accessibility and engagement for students with disabilities.

3. Implementing AI-based learning systems in Jere LGA schools will face significant barriers, including resource limitations and resistance to technology adoption.

Significance of the study

This study will contribute to the development of AI-powered educational tools designed specifically for students with disabilities. The results could guide policymakers and educational institutions in implementing inclusive educational practices, promoting equal opportunities for all learners, regardless of their physical or cognitive limitations.

Scope and limitations of the study

The study will focus on designing and evaluating an AI-based learning adaptation system for students with disabilities in Jere LGA, Borno State. Limitations may include challenges in acquiring sufficient data on student performance, the availability of AI technologies, and local infrastructure constraints.

Definitions of terms

• AI-Based Learning Adaptation: The use of artificial intelligence to personalize educational content and delivery according to the specific needs of individual learners.

• Disabilities: Physical, sensory, or cognitive impairments that limit a student's ability to engage in traditional learning methods.

• Inclusive Education: Education systems that provide all students, including those with disabilities, access to the same learning opportunities.
